When looking for college football coaching jobs you are considering a niche field that is not the easiest to get in to. Typically there is a process for getting a college football coaching job that starts with high school sports and moves up through the ranks, some, hopefully to NFL coaches. Often one of the criteria that colleges look for are former football players, usually ones who weren’t stars of the team and have the ability to see all aspects of the game and think in terms of just offensive and defensive plays but the whole picture.
Most of the time, in order to be a college football coach you have to prove yourself in another coaching arena, typically a high school football coach of a winning team (a consistently winning team) finds that they will be recruited for college football coaching jobs in different states. This proven record can also mean producing star players year after year as well.
Another group that may find it easier to get college football coaching jobs are NFL assistant coaches. It is often hard to prove that you can coach a NFL team on your own if you are an assistant coach. Many assistant NFL coaches find that it is easier to get a NFL head coach position if they move into a head coaching job at a college and prove their worth as a head coach. While many people might think of this as taking a step back, the truth is that most head coaches have to prove their ability to be a head coach at some point. It is rare for the NFL to promote an assistant coach to head coach when a head coach is fired (or retires) they generally start looking for a proven head coach.
Lastly, many head coaches are unhappy at their current colleges and they start looking for college football coaching jobs at different colleges. They can find these jobs by using the Internet or just calling around to different colleges. Also, they can simply keep their ear to the ground (so to speak) an listen for the scuttlebutt on the different colleges and their coaches.
