There can be a lot of prestige associated with football coaching careers, especially if you are college football coaches or NFL coaches of winning teams. However, before you can start looking at college football coaching jobs you need to understand what a college is looking for from their coaches. The first thing that you need to know is that you have to have proven experience in the coaching arena. What this means is that you have to show that you already coach (or in the very recent past have coached) a successful team. That means a winning team.

The next thing that you need to do to get college football coaching jobs is to either be recruited for the job or you need to find them for yourself and convince the college that you are the right person for the job. Even if you have the winning-est team in your town you may not be recruited simply because of lack of media exposure, so you will have to go after it yourself. You can use the Internet and do a search for colleges who are looking for new coaches. You can also track schools that have been on a losing streak for a while and send your resume to them as well, chances are they will be looking soon if they aren’t already.

Sometimes you can make up for lack of experience with additional education in a sports related field. So, let’s say you are a high school football coach of a winning team but you have only been coaching for three years or so, then some college football coaching jobs may consider your degree combined with your success at coaching as good enough for the job. This will not always be the case so prepare yourself for rejection.

There are sites dedicated to helping coaches find college football coaching jobs, but you do need to remember something important. There are only so many colleges in the country and that means that there are a limited number of jobs. It isn’t like there is a new college football team being established everyday, so you need to be prepared to pay your dues and have some patients when considering looking for a college football coaching job.
