Is your long term career goal to be a college football coach and you are still in high school, or just in college? It is not too early to start getting your ducks in a row to land that job of your dreams. There are not many college football coaching jobs available each year, and there are probably at least twenty or more applicants for each job. The first thing you need to do in your trip up the ladder towards your goal is keep your grades up, in all academic areas. There are two reasons for that, the college will be impressed by the high grades, and second, if the coaching job does not come through, you can fall back on another career until a coaching job does come through.
Second is your career in football. What positions did you play and what kind of record did you have. Can you get recommendations from your coaches as a team player, or were you a hot head that didn’t follow coaches rules. Did you show up on time for practices? Did you work hard? Did you show a good knowledge of the game?
What was your life like off of the playing field and out of the classroom. Have you been an outstanding citizen? What type of credentials can you add to your resume like maybe an Eagle Scout, spent summers working for Habitat for Humanity, was a volunteer with Special Olympics. No, these things have absolutely nothing to do with the actual game of football, but they do show the mark of a person who is well rounded, of a person who is caring and willing to give of self to the community and who does not just live for the game of football. College football is about people, young students who will be looking up to you for leadership, to be a role model for them as they pursue their academic and sports careers. It is important to keep a good balance between the two.
As you search for college football coaching jobs you must be able to demonstrate to the colleges and universities that you possess the above qualities, so that you are able to pass them on to the football team, and to the entire student body. If you should land a job in a smaller college, in all likelihood, you will be teaching other academic classes as well, so these positive characteristics are a must. You may be teaching a history class, or English, or who knows. Your task is to get your act together now, even if you are just in High School, and keep your sights set high, and you should do well. Good luck.
